Six Common Questions About Chiropractic Care

If you are having back pain, neck pain, headaches, bad posture, etc. you may have decided that it is time for chiropractic care at TriMed Spine & Joint in Boca Raton. You may have questions though. Here are six of the most common questions we tend to hear most often.

1 – What’s Wrong With Me?

Accurately identifying the cause of spinal pain or other discomfort almost always requires a thorough consultation and examination. Do not assume your pain comes from the same problem your neighbor had. What helped them will not necessarily help you. Every individual is unique. So are the health conditions they suffer and the treatments they require.

Some conditions fall outside the chiropractic scope, or are better managed by another health care specialist. In those cases we will gladly and promptly make the necessary referral.

2 – Can Chiropractic Help Me?

Chiropractic medicine has helped millions of people worldwide. The problems it addresses go well beyond back and neck ailments. Chiropractic works with the spinal column and its relationship with the nervous system. By optimizing spinal column structure and biomechanics, irritation and stress are removed and health can once again be achieved.

You may be surprised by what the research shows. Studies have found chiropractic care effective for back and neck ailments. Some have also reported relief for children with ear infections and for women with dysmenorrhea, or painful menses. Other seemingly “non-spinal” conditions have been studied as well. It would not be prudent to guarantee relief from these conditions, or to claim we “treat” them. What we can say is that chiropractic has helped millions of people by positively affecting the nervous system.

3 – How Long Will It Take?

Treatment lengths vary from person to person and from condition to condition. Even so, there are a few rules of thumb you can follow.

First, newer injuries tend to respond in fewer visits when treated promptly and appropriately. That assumes no major tissue injury has occurred. Many of these first time injuries can be effectively managed in as little as 3 to 4 visits. Conditions present for more than 3 months are generally more stubborn. Recurring conditions are also harder to manage. Resolution may require 12 visits or more.

The only sure way to determine how long your treatment will take is to schedule a consultation and/or examination.

Some people prefer to wait and hope the problem goes away on its own. Understand that the longer a condition has been around, the more treatments it will eventually require.

4 – How Much Will It Cost?

Costs vary and generally depend on the number of treatments required to effectively treat your condition. A number of studies have shown chiropractic care to be highly cost-effective. That is in comparison with other forms of medical care for similar conditions. According to the 1993 Manga Report,

5 – Do I Have To Keep Coming Back For Treatments?

You may have heard the notion that once you go to a chiropractor you have to keep going back. Before we answer that question, ask yourself how many times you have visited a dentist? Like most people, you’ve probably gone dozens of times. Why? Quite simply, to prevent your teeth from literally rotting out of your head.

Once we have eliminated your pain and rehabilitated the injured tissues, we do recommend periodic spinal checkups. Your dentist works this way, and many medical experts now agree. Prevention is the key to reducing recurrences and minimizing new injuries.

So the answer is yes, we want you to keep coming back, but just periodically. Periodic chiropractic care minimizes spinal and nerve stresses, reduces recurrences of old injuries, prevents new injuries from developing, and minimizes degenerative processes, which enhances overall health and wellness.

6 – Are Chiropractic Treatments Safe and Do They Hurt?

Chiropractic care has a strong safety record and is used for patients of all ages, from infants to seniors. Our methods are non-invasive and drug-free. As with any form of care the risks are not zero, but serious complications are rare. The most common reaction is temporary soreness or stiffness for a day or two after an adjustment, similar to how you feel after starting a new exercise routine.

Some conditions change what we do or rule out certain techniques altogether, including severe osteoporosis, spinal fractures, bone tumors or infection, inflammatory arthritis affecting the upper neck, and some vascular conditions. That is why we take a full history, examine you and review your imaging before beginning care.

The treatments themselves are generally not painful. Most patients look forward to them and many feel relief right away. If you arrive in moderate to severe pain you may feel some discomfort during the visit, but care is always gentle and non-invasive, and we adjust our approach to what you can tolerate.
